Left to our own choice, each of us has an instinctive way of making decisions or problem solving – using your gut instinct or feelings. These instincts can be broken down into four action modes: Fact Finder, Follow Thru, Quick Start and Implementor.
These have been identified by Kathy Kolbe, an expert in human instinct, who developed the Kolbe Index, an assessment people take to measure and understand their instinctive way of doing things and help them to work smarter by playing to their strengths.
Research shows people who are free to choose their own method of accomplishing a task or providing a solution are more productive, and our experience as Kolbe Consultants, is that teams work smarter and communicate better when they understand their own Kolbe, and that of their colleagues.
The Kolbe assessment is a series of multiple-choice questions that ask what someone would most likely do, or least likely do, given a particular scenario. The answers to these questions yield the “M.O.,” which is a person’s unique set of strengths in terms of how they take action in the world. These strengths are related to the purposeful actions, reactions, and interactions we have in the world. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers, no baseline score, and no percentile. Each outcome is equally valid. This is one of the ways the Kolbe A differs from other assessment tests.
Another way in which the Kolbe is different is what it measures. It assesses your striving instincts – ones that you are innately born with. It illuminates the conative action that result from the use of your instincts and your will. It isn’t designed to assess variable factors like memory, information processing rate, or even personality type. It’s designed to reveal who you are without any other conditionals, so that you can structure your commitments and goals to align your instinctive talents with the tasks and roles you are accountable for. Years of data show that the Kolbe scores do not vary much, if any, after retesting, making it a highly reliable and useful tool.

The Fact Finder mode provides insight into your liking of details.
SIMPLIFY 1-3
Wants to simplify and only get to the point.
EXPLAIN 4-6
Wants to have the bigger picture in mind.
SPECIFY 7-10
Wants to strategize and get well into details.
The Follow-Thru mode takes a look at the way a person wants to structure, arrange and design action.
ADAPT 1- 3
They would set out a minimal structure and just start the process.
MAINTAIN 4-6
They have a certain structure and will try to keep to it, but might adjust it in the process.
SYSTEMATIZE 7-10
They would think the action through.
The Quick Start mode examines how a person is to take uncalculated risks.
STABILIZE 1-3
They don’t enjoy taking risks and are better at having procedures and keeping to protocols.
MODIFY 4-6
They would take a risk only if they were sure that the odds worked in their favor.
INNOVATE 7-10
They get into the action head first and take risks.
The Implementor mode assesses a person’s affinity to construct handcrafted solutions.
ENVISION 1-3
They like to think abstractly and visualize things.
RESTORE 4-6
They are good at improving already existing solutions.
DEMONSTRATE 7-10
They want to create concrete solutions and prototypes.
The process starts with your link to your Kolbe A Index assessment. Simply answer each question based on how you would do something if free to do it your way. About 15-20 minutes is all you will need.
